CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Making and keeping resolutions can be a good way to build healthy habits in the new year.
Shedding pounds is the go-to New Year’s resolution, but health-related resolutions can also include gathering information about a health concern, scheduling screenings, actually reading your health insurance policy, joining a support group, making a doctor appointment and more.
We asked some well-known Clevelanders for their health-related 2020 goals. Many said they want to exercise more, eat less red meat, take time for relaxation and play an instrument to relieve stress.
We hope you find some inspiration in their resolutions:
Chris Ronayne, president of University Circle Inc.
Cleveland is a great four-season city to actively enjoy outdoors. In 2020 I’m looking forward to biking to work more along the Cleveland Lakefront Bike Trail and through Rockefeller Park, walking more along the Towpath Trail and in more of the 18 reservations of the Cleveland Metroparks, and skating more at the Rink at Wade Oval and ice rinks around Cuyahoga County.

Streamlining my workouts, with the age-appropriate realization that the goal is to maintain and not try to be The Rock at the gym!
Kirsten Ellenbogen, president and CEO of Great Lakes Science Center
Leave meat out of my lunches. Our family has already gone meat-free for dinners, so this is the next step for me. It’ll be a long time before I can give up my turkey bacon at breakfast, though.
Stay in touch with my primary care physician. I took the first step last year to get better access to a primary care physician. Now I need to get in the habit of scheduling the annual visit and preventive screenings!
Put public transportation on my calendar. I have an easy ride downtown on the Rapid and I love the walk from Public Square to Great Lakes Science Center. I just need to use my calendar to remind myself to leave the car at home when I don’t have a lot of off-site meetings.
Jowan Smith, CEO of Getting Our Babies to College 101
I live daily with lupus, so my health goals are all about living a better life:
· Join a lupus support group.
· Commit to going 100% no red meat.
· Do water aerobics three days a week.
Rick Jackson, senior host and producer at Ideastream
Lose 15 pounds by increasing a walking regimen.
Take up daily meditation, because mindfulness will help center you.
Return to playing an instrument, as a stress reliever.
Rob Falls, president and CEO of Falls Communications
Reduce stress by taking more time for interests outside the company, and using personal time and vacation for golf, hunting and pleasure reading.
Work out with trainer three times a week.
Measure and improve my cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index numbers.
Phyllis Seven Harris, executive director at The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center of Greater Cleveland
As a middle-aged black woman, in 2020 I will resolve to:
· Lead by example in increasing my efforts to nurture my physical, emotional and psychological well-being.
· Schedule annual appointments with my health care providers for a mammogram, colonoscopy and dental exam.
· Set goals with my personal trainer each week.
Dr. Cliff Deveny, president and CEO of Summa Health
Reduce stress by always looking for the best in each person I meet.
Dedicate at least one hour per day to myself to work out, read a book or laugh.
Always ask, on my toughest leadership issues, how this affects the health care of our community.
Tony Sias, president and CEO of Karamu House
Use 60% of PTO as uninterrupted vacation time. No work!
Have two meatless days per week.
Delegate more and trust that people have different styles of getting things done.
Meditate daily.
