Maple Grove is the latest city to dedicate resources for the mental health of first responders. The City Council approved an agreement for a police therapist service contract.
The service will be part of the agency’s wellness program. Services like confidential therapy sessions and critical incident check-ins will be open to officers and their family members within the department.
“Its kind of come to the forefront of law enforcement, that cumulative stress or acute stress have caused officers performance to decline has caused issues within the industry that we’re trying to get ahead of. This therapist allows us the mental health aspect,” said Maple Grove Police Commander Jon Wetternach.
Another service offered will be a therapy dog. That service animal is currently in training.
